Why is my image so big to start with?
Modern phones save photos at 12+ megapixels at maximum quality, which is more than any website actually uses. The phone wants to keep the original for editing; the web doesn't care.
JPG or PNG?
JPG for photos. PNG for graphics with sharp edges, logos, or anything with transparency. WebP for both, if your target platform supports it (most modern browsers do).
How small can I make an image?
For web display, most images can be compressed to 20-30% of their original size with no visible quality loss. Going more aggressive starts to show artifacts — soft edges, banding in skies. Compare before and after at full size before publishing.
